Fifty-five singers gathered from across the UK for Sing the Cambridge Colleges from Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 April 2018. We were based at Clare College, in the heart of Cambridge, singing in the Chapel, and visiting three other colleges to sing during the weekend: Emmanuel, Downing and St John’s. The singing was led by Jane Harris, Director of Songways and Helen Chadwick, accomplished composer, singer and choir leader from London.

Between them Jane and Helen taught a wide range of songs including the wonderful We shall be known by Californian duo MaMuse, beautiful love songs from Croatia and Georgia, an exquisite Kyrie from Corsica and a glorious South African church song, Thixo onothando. Both leaders also shared their own original compositions including Jane’s new song, May you go well, led with the violin and Helen’s Dancing in my mother’s arms and Never be afraid. Singers enjoyed the different acoustics and settings of each of the colleges. All the songs and harmonies were taught by ear. The final evening culminated in a delicious private feasting dinner at Fitzbillies restaurant, with entertainment provided by members of the group.

Many thanks to all the singers, to Helen Chadwick for joining us as guest tutor, to Julia Williams for co-ordinating the event, and to all the colleges for a warm welcome.

Comments from some singers:
