Join Songways Choirs | Bath & Bradford on Avon

Sing with us…

Join our Bath choir on Wednesday evenings or the Bradford on Avon choir on Friday mornings, both led by Jane Harris.

We sing in two beautiful and spacious venues:

  • Wednesdays 7:30 – 9:30pm St Swithin’s Church, Bath BA1 5LY
  • Fridays 9:45 – 11:45am Holy Trinity Church, Bradford on Avon BA15 1LW

Expect a warm welcome and rewarding singing sessions filled with a wide variety of songs, rich harmonies, infectious fun and moments of stillness. There are no auditions and there is no need to read music – Jane teaches all the songs and harmonies by ear.

We relish the energy, vibrancy and variety of the songs we sing in Songways and are excited by the way singing in harmony can take us into dramatically different sound worlds. Jane plays the violin and we love to collaborate with instrumental musicians for some of our songs – including guitar, flutes and hammer dulcimer. Singing with Songways is a chance to develop your voice, increasing range and resonance, releasing tension and exploring new singing styles.

Special events for the combined Bath and Bradford on Avon choirs:

  • Saturday 5 April Bath Abbey 1 – 2pm
    Lunchtime concert
  • Friday 16 May Evening
Bath Festival Party in the City
  • Sunday 18 May 4pm
    Welcome in the May!
Holy Trinity Church, Bradford on Avon

Description

JOINING SONGWAYS

We are looking for adult singers of all ages to join us. Lift your voice and immerse yourself in glorious harmonies, develop your voice and discover new singing styles. We love singing together, we are friendly and welcoming and we make a good sound.

What do we sing? Uplifting songs from a wide range of harmony singing traditions. Discover rich South African choruses, beautiful and evocative folk songs, lively rhythmic American songs, vibrant Eastern European songs and powerful songs of freedom. Enjoy original songs specially written for Songways by Jane, new songs from visiting tutors and songs of stillness and peace.

How do we sing? Jane teaches by ear, singing each part using a call and response and layering up harmonies part by part. If you haven’t experienced this before, you will be amazed how quickly and beautifully a song comes together. We usually sing gathered in a circle so that everyone can see and hear each other. Sometimes we move the group around to experience songs in new ways and to explore different styles of singing, all of which enlivens and enriches the experience. For some songs we add instruments – violin, bouzouki, banjo or guitar – which adds yet another dimension.

Why sing? Singing makes you feel good and has proven health benefits: it’s good for posture, breathing and general well-being. Singing in harmony with others can be fun, heart-warming, soothing and at times deeply moving. It’s also a great way to make friends.
