Singers from all three Songways choirs gathered on Saturday 24 March for our Spring Big Sing at St Swithin’s Church, a joyful and enriching afternoon. The wide range of songs included the lively classic gospel number Gonna reach my heavenly home, the soaring 16th century six-part canon, Laudate nomen Domini, a fun Glen Miller style round, the rich South African church song Motho a wela, the exquisite Deep peace of the running wave and two of our favourites: Brendan Taaffe’s To the hills and Jane’s Everybody needs Beauty. A particular highlight was the lilting Follow the heron home by Scottish songwriter Karine Polwart with Bradford on Avon singer Giles Coker playing the bouzouki and Jane playing the fiddle.
Many thanks to all those who brought cakes in support of the extraordinary Kiko Matthews. The niece of one of our regular singers, Kiko has just broken the world record for rowing the Atlantic solo, raising funds for King’s College Hospital.
New singers are warmly welcome to join Songways choirs: Tuesday mornings or Wednesday evenings in Bath and Friday mornings in Bradford on Avon. Contact Jane to find out more.
