Our sixth online singing workshop series took place on seven Sundays in April and May 2021, 7:30pm UK time via Zoom.
Led by Jane Harris, Director of Songways
Nearly fifty singers took part in the series from across the UK, US and Canada, culminating in an online Big Sing on Sunday 30 May. We were also joined by singers from Bath & Bradford on Avon Songways choirs. Warmest thanks to everyone.
So many wonderful, heart warming songs
These sessions have been a wonderful boost throughout the last year
Fantastic
We learned seven songs in the course of the series in a variety of styles:
- May you go well A song from Jane’s album, One touch of nature, inspired by the Julian of Norwich words All shall be well, all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.
- Haufi le morena A beautiful South African church song Nearer my God to thee – beginning as a stately hymn and building into a joyous call and response.
- Alleluia Amen A new song by Jane, written in March 2021 for the online Soul Soundings event – soaring interweaving parts and glorious harmonies.
- Be still my soul Another new song by Jane written April 2021, with a “coming out of lockdown” theme drawing on traditional spirituals and gospel traditions.
- Jubilate Deo Beautiful 16th century round by Michael Praetorius, sung with a surround sound recording specially made to create the feel of singing in a cathedral full of voices.
- Sing John Ball Rousing folk song with the words All shall be ruled by fellowship I say, when we are ruled by the love of one another, sung with lively violin accompaniment by Jane.
- Eleno kerko Joyful Macedonian folk song, sung with many layers of violin accompaniment specially recorded by Jane.
We have all so enjoyed these Sunday Zoom sessions, connecting singers across the miles. In response to demand, we are planning to run a series of monthly Sunday Zooms from October 2021 through to March 2022.
