More than eighty singers gathered in Bath Abbey for Soul Soundings on Saturday 30 September, a special participatory singing event led by Jane Harris under the awe-inspiring Gaia by Luke Gerram. Singers came from Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Wells and London as well as Bath and the surrounding area.
The most beautiful time
Truly uplifting… a wondrous setting, beautiful songs, fabulous voices and a perfect leader
Such a moving and memorable event
A feast of soul food
A wonderful experience
We began the evening gathered in the open Nave, filling the Abbey with sound and exploring the harmonics and resonance of the space. Jane taught all the songs and harmonies by ear including her own song In beauty may I stand, which we sang to each other from end to end of the Nave, creating beautiful overlapping harmonies. The evening was also enriched by readings which led into a beautiful group improvisation, with singers singing freely, held in the group sound and the incredible acoustics. We ended singing Jane’s song In the beauty of the world find rest and be free gathered around a pool of candlelight.
The event supported FareShare South West, the region’s largest food redistribution charity. They take good quality surplus food from the food industry and deliver it to more than 400 charities across the South West. Last year they provided enough food for 5 million meals.
