SING the CAMBRIDGE COLLEGES 2016

Fifty-five singers gathered for the 2016 singing weekend, Thurs 7 – Sun 10 April. We were based at Corpus Christi College, in the heart of Cambridge, singing in the Chapel, and visiting four other colleges to sing during the weekend: Emmanuel, Queens’, Clare and St John’s. The singing was led by Jane Harris, Director of Songways, and guest tutor, John Harrison, a dynamic choral director and composer from Vermont, US. Singers came from a wide area including Somerset, Wiltshire, Devon, Bristol, London, Yorkshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Glasgow and Perthshire.

The two leaders taught a wide range of songs, including a soaring 17th century canon, lively rhythmic American songs, heartfelt new compositions by both Jane and John, and a vibrant South African church chorus. We enjoyed the different acoustics and settings of each of the colleges. All the songs and harmonies were taught by ear.  Our last evening culminated in a delicious private feasting dinner at Fitzbillies restaurant, with entertainment provided by members of the group.

Many thanks to all the singers, to John Harrison for joining us as a guest tutor, Julia Williams for assisting with the organisation, David Lewis Baker for photography, and to all the colleges for a warm welcome.

Here are some comments from singers:
