TUTORS and COORDINATOR

The tutors will be Jane Harris, Director of Songways, and Kate Howard, an accomplished singer and choir-leader from SW Scotland. The coordinator will be Joceline Rennie.

Jane Harris is an experienced choir leader and Director of Songways, based in Bath, and an Old Member of Corpus Christi College. She has a clear, inclusive and enabling teaching style, uncovering the best in singers’ voices and drawing people together with heartfelt, resonant singing. Jane teaches by ear and loves to explore songs in different ways to enrich and deepen the singing experience. Jane has a rich, vibrant voice and has performed with the acclaimed Helen Chadwick Song Theatre. She also plays the violin and writes harmony songs, often inspired by the natural world.

An exceptional teacher with a wonderful choice of songs

Kate Howard is an accomplished choir leader, based in Dumfries and Galloway where she directs Cairn Chorus, a large community choir that collaborates with professional musicians and ensembles. Kate has developed a unique approach to working with the voice based on the union of body and breath and her knowledge of global singing traditions. She has extensive knowledge of many styles of vocal music from South African, Gospel, Eastern European to English Folk and works with a group to create an authentic sound. She is also an experienced performer and has toured with the Vermont based vocal group, Northern Harmony. She has a big heart, powerful voice and a joyous approach to singing.

Joceline Rennie sings with two West Penwith choirs and dances with two Cornish dance groups. Her background is in event management, public relations and marketing and she runs her own on-line retail business. Joceline will be coordinating practical arrangements, helping to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

REPERTOIRE

The repertoire will include songs from a wide range of harmony singing traditions. For example, American folk hymns and spirituals, early canons, South African choral music, sacred songs from Georgia and Corsica, chants from the Taize community and original songs by Jane. Songs will be taught by ear with some scores provided.
