Join Songways: Wednesdays 7:15 – 9:15pm

Join Songways on Wednesday evenings and learn beautiful songs from a wide range of harmony singing traditions. Led by Jane Harris in the beautiful setting and acoustics of St Swithin’s Church, Bath.

We are looking for adult singers of all ages to join us. Leave your working day behind, lift your voice and immerse yourself in glorious harmonies – it will make you feel good. Discover vibrant new songs and singing styles. All voices are welcome.

When is it and how much does it cost? Sessions run 7:15-9:15pm. Your first session is free. If you decide to join, membership is per half term (pro rata if you join mid-term) and works out at £8 per session. Term dates are shown below.

Who are we? We are currently 25 singers from in and around Bath. We love singing together and discovering new songs and harmonies. We are a friendly and welcoming group and we make a good sound.

What do we sing? Uplifting songs from a wide range of harmony singing traditions. Discover rich South African choruses, beautiful British and Irish folksongs, lively rhythmic American songs, vibrant Eastern European songs and powerful songs of freedom. Enjoy songs of stillness and peace, new songs from our visiting tutors and songs specially written for Songways by Jane.

How do we sing? Jane teaches by ear, singing each part using a call and response and layering up harmonies part by part. If you haven’t experienced this before, you will be amazed how quickly and beautifully a song comes together. We usually sing gathered in a circle so that everyone can see and hear each other. Sometimes we move the group around to experience songs in new ways and to explore different styles of singing, all of which enlivens and enriches the experience. For some songs we add instruments – fiddle, bouzouki, banjo or guitar – which adds yet another dimension.

Why sing? Singing makes you feel good and has proven health benefits: it’s good for posture, breathing and general well-being. Singing in harmony with others can be fun, heart-warming, soothing and at times deeply moving. It’s also a great way to make friends.

Jane Harris
is an experienced choir leader and the founder and Director of Songways. She has a clear, inclusive and enabling teaching style which uncovers the best in singers’ voices and draws people together with heartfelt, resonant singing. Jane also writes songs, often inspired by the natural world. Following the publication in 2015 of her first songbook, Everybody needs Beauty, Jane’s songs are being sung by several choirs in the UK and the US.

A brilliant choir leader – always patient, positive and encouraging

Superb choice of songs & inspirational leadership
